Portsalon Golf Club

  • January 10, 2020 // The Consummate Pro

The first round of the 2020 season took Luke to a course he had not yet had the pleasure of previously playing. Portsalon Golf Club located on the Fanad Peninsula, County Donegal is situated in an area of traditional links golf. The Rosapenna Resort, Donegal Golf Club (Murvagh) & Ballyliffin Golf Club are all within an hour & 30-minute drive. Here are his thoughts on Portsalon.

The first thing that struck me as I stood on the first tee were the views of the Donegal hills. Portsalon provides one of the most naturally beautiful backdrops a golfer could ever ask for. The course contours only add to the natural surroundings, making this one of the most enjoyable ‘golf’ walks I’ve had. the 1st hole at Portsalon Golf Club

I found the course to be one of the fairest and most enjoyable that I have played for a while. It consistently maintained demanding challenges from every shot. Each hole forces the golfer to strategically navigate their way between the dunes, demanding precision with every club in the bag. There is a great blend of holes requiring left to right and right to left shaped shots.

Natural contours and well positioned hazards await loose shots from every tee box and fairway. The opening 7 holes make their way along the coast and between the dunes before eventually heading inland for the next 11 holes. The open lunar landscape means all golfers will need to factor in the elements when plotting their way around the demanding Portsalon Golf Club.

When visiting the links golf heaven that is Donegal, Portsalon Golf Club is a course not to be missed. I am already looking forward to my next visit.
