Scotland

Welcome to Scotland

Welcome to Scotland, ‘The Home of Golf.’ It is hard to visit Scotland and not be taken in by the array of world-class golf courses on offer. There are over five hundred and fifty golf courses to choose from, but we will do our best to narrow it down for you, highlight the gems and let you know what else you can do on your golf trip. There are few better places to play a round of golf than in the country that invented it.

Let’s start with the most common golf destination, and the place where it all began, St Andrews, and in particular The Old Course. This is probably the most iconic golf course in the world. For a true Scottish Links experience, the Old Course is simply a must visit. Kingsbarns, located just seven miles from the Old Course, is also another great experience. Although a relatively new course (relatively speaking) to the scene in 2000, you will be astonished at its maturity and just how true it plays. St Andrews as a town is awash with great bars and hotels and feels like ‘golf central’ in the peak summer months; here you will soak up and create memories which will last a lifetime. Hotels which we love include Hotel du Vin, Rusacks, the Old Course Hotel, Hawkswood Hotel, and Kinnettles Hotel. This coastal town is soaked in history and culture; there are around 60 cafes and restaurants with something for all tastes, for atmospheric pubs, try Vic, the Adamson, The Whey Pat Tavern and of course The Dunvegan. Only 100 yards from the Old Course’s 18th green, this is arguably the most famous sporting pub in the world.

Next, we will head southwest to the Lothians. Home to some of Scotland’s finest courses just outside the city of Edinburgh it is surrounded by stunning countryside. East Lothian is home to Muirfield which has hosted the Open Championship an astonishing sixteen times with the brilliant Gullane
Golf Club next door with its three courses to choose from. The accommodation front is equally impressive with the stunning Greywalls Hotel and Chez Roux only 120 yards from Muirfield Golf Course. A short journey east will bring you to Musselburgh where you will find Archerfield Links and the Renaissance Club next door to each other; two outstanding golfing locations both offering individual character and superb courses. These areas are just a short hop from the capital city, Edinburgh, which combines a mix of the medieval old town with Georgian new town and has an infectious atmosphere. Enjoy Edinburgh Castle and visit The Royal mile, also known as The Old Town, this is a mile-long street between the Castle and Holyrood House. This magnificent cobbled street is steeped in history, most notably with its links to the infamous murderers Burke and Hare, but even if you are not fans of the macabre, you can always browse the tourist shops along this great cobbled thoroughfare.

At the heart of Scotland is Central Perthshire, and in the midst of it is the jewel that is Gleneagles. En route, a stop off at the lovely inland course of Ladybank Golf Club is well worth the sojourn. Gleneagles is a 5* golf resort and has 3 Championship Golf Courses, The PGA Centenary, The King’s Course and The Queen’s Course. Besides the award-winning courses, you can enjoy the onsite spa, the Michelin-star restaurant, numerous onsite activities, and of course the whiskey tours. The property is one of the most luxurious in Scotland, beautifully furnished and decorated, this is the epitome of luxury in a stunning setting.

Heading southwest, you will arrive at the iconic Scottish Golf resort, Trump Turnberry. This resort is truly exceptional in every way with 192 bedrooms to choose from, a luxurious Spa, horseback riding, air rifle shooting, mini Highland Games, quad biking and of course two fabulous golf courses. Alongside the famous Ailsa and Robert the Bruce courses, there is an additional 9-hole course that provides plenty of entertainment. The legendary Ailsa course is consistently within the top 20 courses in the world, and the iconic Turnberry lighthouse is a beauty to be seen. Around this stretch of coastline, there are so many other tremendous courses to play such as Royal Troon, Western Gailes, Dundonald, and Prestwick.

Time to travel up North, and a stop-off in the city of Aberdeen where you will find the excellent Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen with its beautiful clubhouse and astonishing food and drink on offer. Royal Aberdeen has been host club to many amateur and professional tournaments down the years, and other great courses to experience on your golf vacation would include Cruden Bay and Murcar Links. For accommodations, you will be blown away by the hospitality and food at the five-star Marcliffe Hotel offering a countryside feel in the city and the wonderful Chester hotel offering city glamour, known for its rare whiskeys and cocktails. Aberdeen is also home to 263 castles and eight distilleries so take your time and enjoy what is on offer,

Heading up to the Highlands and you will be treated to the likes of Castle Stuart Golf Links, Nairn Golf Club, Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club, Boat-of-Garten, Spey Valley and of course the renowned Royal Dornoch Golf Club. The Highlands is a magical place with hospitality like no other. The outdoors is where to be to soak up every part of what is on offer no matter the weather. Kayaking, bird watching, forest walks, castles and of course the distilleries. This part of Scotland is a must-visit, and despite being a little off the beaten track, it is sure to go straight into your heart.
