Lough Eske Castle

"Lough Eske has it all."

Lough Eske, Co. Donegal, Ireland

A seat of the clan O’Donnell since the 14th century, the Elizabethan-styled Lough Eske Castle has a rich history in Donegal. Situated on the shores of Lough Eske itself, within a 43-acre estate, the Castle, which was built in 1861, was extensively refurbished and brought back to life in 2007. The property is located just over three miles from Donegal town and affords a great base from which to play and explore the great golf courses of northwest Ireland and Donegal in particular.

The renovation of the property brought about 97 magnificent bedrooms, each of which reflects the style of the original building. The use of stone, wood and hand-picked furnishings and fabrics all blend to bring about a feeling of opulence while never detaching you from the rugged and wild landscape outside. Accommodation types range from Courtyard Rooms to Deluxe, Junior Suites, Garden Suites, Family Rooms, and Castle Rooms & Suites. The entry-level accommodations offer guests the opportunity to throw open their patio doors onto the beautiful woodland and gardens that surround them. The Courtyard rooms are flooded with natural light and locally sourced sandstone lines the floors. Facilities are superb and modern as you would expect with Wi-Fi, 32″ flat screen TV’s, a refreshments center. Beds are incredibly comfortable with beautifully appointed en-suite bathrooms complete with twin basins, rain showers, and robes.

Lough Eske has a range of beautifully appointed Suites that in the main are located in the original part of the hotel. The Consummate Pro particularly likes the Tower Suite that demonstrates the history of the original Castle best and has some great views down the winding pathways that lead up to the hotel. At 545 square feet, divided over three floors, it still has an intimate feeling about it. The furnishings are extraordinarily opulent and rich in design giving that added importance. The winding staircase in the Suite that leads to the seating area is just reminiscent of a bygone era. The top floor affords guests an open plan bathroom area with all modern conveniences yet retaining all of the original character. The Tower Suite allows guests just a little sense of what it must have been like to reside in one of the country’s most beautiful castles back in the day.

Lough Eske Castle offers an array of great dining options. Cedars Restaurant is the hotels fine dining space that provides guests with floor to ceiling windows to look out upon the grounds and woodlands. The focus is on local with so many of the dishes being influenced by the Donegal countryside and provider for by great local artisan producers. Monkfish, mussels, and seabass sit alongside Lamb, Braised Beef and Duck. For steak lovers, a selection of the finest Irish Hereford and Angus beef is available from an 8oz Fillet through to a 2lb Tomahawk. The focus is on unfussy dishes, prepared only with the very best Irish ingredients, and it shows on the plate.

The Oak Bar & Gallery Bar are in the original part of the hotel, and so have a great ambiance. Enjoy everything from a creamy pint of Guinness and a freshly prepared pie from the chef’s table or sip on an exquisite cocktail form a menu spanning the globe. A bistro style menu operates all day in the Gallery for guests looking for light-bites and snacks.

The Spa at Lough Eske is a relaxing space to restore a little calm into one’s life! The pool area sits over the original foundations of the Victorian Glasshouse. Comprising the pool, sauna, steam rooms, seven treatment rooms, ice fountain, hydrotherapy pool, sanarium, and two couples treatment rooms, Lough Eske has it all.

The Consummate Pro highly recommends Lough Eske Castle Hotel for the quality and standard of its accommodation, its food and facilities. The unique nature of the Castle makes it a delightful stay and an excellent base for golf at nearby Co. Donegal (Murvagh), or Co. Sligo (Rosses Point) Golf Clubs
